Join your colleagues for a panel discussion on what the horticulture industry may look like in fifty years.  Fifty years may seem like a long time off but there are sure to be some interesting ideas - some serious and some outright funny - that come from a discussion of industry leaders thinking about the rather distant future.  Who knows, the discussion may even give you some ideas to use now on how you can set your company apart from the competition! This multi-discipline panel will bring together professionals of various expertise and background to integrate the industry as a whole.

Changing Retail Models Panel Discussion

Join Doug Welty of Cottage Hill Nursery and others for a panel discussion on retail models and how the traditional retail model may be changing.  Doug's experience with the Direct Response channel of selling is quite different from the traditional bricks and mortar retail.

Panelists:

  • Dale Bachman, Bachman's

    • Dale Bachman is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer for Bachman's, Inc.  Bachman's, founded in 1885, currently operates 29 retail stores in the Twin Cities and St. Cloud, including six Floral, Home and Garden Centers, their Cedar Acres Garden and Landscape Center, as well as twenty-two retail Floral Stores.  Bachman's also operates indoor and outdoor landscaping divisions, a nursery wholesale division, ten acres of greenhouses, and a 670-acre growing range near Lakeville, Minnesoata, which produces many of the plants, flowers, and landscaping products sold at Bachman's locations.  Dale has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Plant and Soil Science from the University of Minnesota.  He is a past president of the American Nursery and Landscape Association.
  • Ellen Wells, Ball Publishing

    • Ellen Wells is editor-at-large for Green Profit magazine, a trade magazine providing ideas and inspiration for the garden center trade. She also pens the popular weekly e-newsletter, Buzz. She holds Master's Degree in Horticulture from Cornell University, and thanks to being raised on New York's oldest family farm, she's  also an avid veggie gardener.

"As the marketing, brand & new business development Manager for Bailey Nurseries, my goal is help our partners succeed in the ever-changing market place and to demystify horticulture for the consumer.

A native of New Zealand that now resides in Minnesota Jonathan earned bachelors degrees in Agricultural Economics and marketing from Canterbury University.

For many years I have come to appreciate the challenges many home gardeners face. Part of my job is to travel the world in search of improved new plants for U.S. gardeners. Motivating forward momentum to 'Get things done' and driving results - by creating partnerships and alliances within the trade.

Overseeing and spearheading one of the largest brands in our industry, the Endless Summer Collection. Other brands include Easy Elegance Roses and First Editions. It is a fun, yet challenging assignment.

With many years of both retail and wholesale experience in our industry, I'm excited to help give you my prospective on what the future holds for our industry."
