Integrated Design

How are architectural designs of living systems such as green roofs, graywater gardens, raingardens etc. interconnecting the fields of architecture, landscape architects and nurseries?  Join Daniel Hellmuth as he explores this concept first as it relates to the design of a local St. Louis garden center and then as he discusses the living building challenge.  Also, make sure to sign up for the Integrated Design Tour with Daniel Hellmuth on Saturday, January 8th.  For more information click here.

Daniel Hellmuth: Green Design and Plant Nurseries - A Natural Synergy

Monday, January 10th; 10:00 - 11:00

LA CES approved.

The Bowood Farms Nursery was incorporated into 3 attached commercial buildings in the Central West End. 4621 Olive Street was transformed into a retail garden shop while the adjoining two structures house an open-air plant nursery within the walls of the existing buildings. A cafe was incorporated into the front of the middle building and serves the nursery and the public.
The project was designed as a destination point featuring a central street side cafe with a terrace overlooking the plant displays. A high loggia surrounds the open-air displays with an upper gallery beneath a green roof. The cafe itself contains a bar and seating area with 14' ceilings and views to the plant displays through a green screen archway. The inside seating area is around 860 SF with an outdoor terraced seating area of 1,200 SF.

The 5,416 SF retail shop consists of a large open space naturally daylit by large factory sash windows and a light lantern sitting atop a bow trussed ceiling vault. A low terrace penetrates the retail area from the adjacent cafe. At the back of the shop is a 1,236 SF office mezzanine above a lower storage area.

Daniel Hellmuth: Living Systems Integration: The Tyson Living Learning Center

Monday, January 10th; 11:30 - 12:30

LA CES approved.

Daniel Hellmuth was the architect for the Living Learning Center building at Washington University's Tyson Research Center.  The building is designed to meet the rigorous standards of the Living Building Challenge.  He will be talking about the Living Learning Center and its analogies with living systems in its adherence to the Living Building Challenge.

Completed in 2009, the Living Learning Center is Tyson's newest building. Built to address Tyson's growing needs for research and teaching space, the Living Learning Center is also designed to meet the most stringent green building standard of the time, the Living Building Challenge. Among other requirements, Living Buildings must create all their own electricity and harvest all of their own water.  Read more about the Living Learning Center at Washington University's Tyson Research Center here.
